While our customers still require car repairs in Manchester throughout the winter, they are generally more concerned about the driving conditions. No winter in New Hampshire passes without some snow and ice, which creates treacherous conditions on the road. However, it’s not just the ice and snow on the ground that causes dangerous conditions. Snow accumulation on top of vehicles also contributes to winter driving conditions, which is why you should always clear off your car before driving. In fact, that’s more than just a suggestion. In New Hampshire, we have Jessica’s Law to protect everyone on the road from flying ice and snow.
You’ve probably heard of Jessica’s Law, but do you know what it requires? Here’s an overview of the law to help you stay safe and avoid fines.
History of the Law
Jessica’s Law has been on the books since 2004. Lawmakers determined the statute was necessary after Jessica Smith, a New Hampshire woman, was seriously injured in 2002 when snow from the roof of a truck struck her windshield. The law usually targets large trucks and commercial vehicles, but it applies to all vehicles.
Key Points of the Law
Although Jessica’s Law is most often enforced with commercial vehicles, everyone should know the details. The law states that drivers must remove snow and ice from the hood, roof, trunk, and windows before driving. Removing snow and ice protects other drivers from flying ice and snow and improves visibility. Even if ice on your windows isn’t at risk of flying off, it still impedes your ability to see while driving.
The primary goal of Jessica’s Law is safety, so any enforcement is with that in mind. You’re more likely to encounter enforcement after a heavy snowfall, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook if it’s just a light dusting. For your own safety as well as other drivers, the smart move is to clear off your car before hitting the road.
Other New England States
The states in the rest of New England have similar snow removal laws, so don’t forget to brush off your car if you’re traveling this winter. Massachusetts has the Snow and Ice Removal Law, and Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, and Rhode Island all have similar laws.
